The paper presents results of manoeuvrability tests of a vessel fitted with POD propulsion. Tests were conducted in the Ship Handling Research and Training Centre in Iława using large (11m long) manned bulk carrier model. Model was fitted alternatively with single or twin POD propulsion. The tests performed included standard turning and initial turning tests, zig-zag tests, pull-out tests and stopping tests. In addition several non-standard tests were executed and on top of that the ability of the ship to manoeuvre in confined water areas was tested. The last series of test included piloting the ship on standard narrow fairway in a form of a loop with several left and right turns, along the solid bank, in shallow water, negotiating narrow passages, entering and leaving locks etc. Forces and moments on the POD were also measured in some runs. The results achieved allowed assessment of the ability to easy handle the ship. |
