Following the increasing demand for lower beds and bigger ships, Festival has gone into a 4-year new building plan in collaboration with the French shipyard Chantiers De L’Atlantique. A series of 3 new builds will incorporates the latest pod technology for their propulsion systems. In this paper the author is analytically explaining the advantages and disadvantages of the system in terms of efficiency as well as manoeuvrability. The paper describes the technical failures (mechanical and electrical) actually encountered over a 3 year operating period. The measured used to resolve said problems are described and evaluated. Also, the development of performance monitoring methodologies and software are described. |
